Sydney runs soft water, so what ends a unit here is almost always a spent sacrificial anode or a failed element rather than scale. That part is the same everywhere.
What is different in these houses is the question of position. A modern system arrives with requirements the building was never designed around: a continuous flow unit needs a flue terminal with real clearances, a heat pump needs airflow and has a compressor that is audible, solar needs the roof.
Put that against solid masonry walls, verandahs, high ceilings and a frontage inside one of Burwood's conservation areas, and the number of positions that satisfy everything is a great deal smaller than in a project home. Plant visible from the street is a planning consideration as well as a plumbing one.
So we work out where it can go before anyone talks about which one to buy. It is a short conversation and it is considerably better than the version that happens after delivery.
